Locals win team run
MARATHON: Tasmanian-based trail running star Hanny Allston put on an amazing display to take out the inaugural Hamilton Island Marathon in a staggering four hours and one minute.
Allston led through the opening half, making the turn in a time that would have had her in the top five of the half marathon, before extending her lead in the growing heat and humidity.
Allston was shadowed early by Richard Banks and Mackay's Oliver Carey, who ran shoulder to shoulder for the opening half before Banks broke away and took the men's title in 4:30.
This was the 10th anniversary of the Hilly Half Marathon and saw the women's title defended by Mackay's Victoria Beck, while Wollongong runner James Tunbridge returned to the winner's circle after relinquishing his 2014 title to place second to marathon legend Steve Moneghetti last year.
Local runners fared well in both the age groups and relays; headlined by Proserpine's Peter Moore, who was fifth overall and winner of the 50-59 men's category, while daughter Holly led home all comers in the Junior 3km event.
Roy Philp, of Cannonvale, picked up third in the 20-29 and a number of Hamilton Island staff and residents enjoyed success in the relay.
Ryder Harvey, who at 14-years-old ran two legs to total 14 kilometres, teamed with Kyle Pevitt-Scott to be the first team home overall and claim the All Male Team win. Despite there being teams from across the state, the first three All-Female teams were locals.
The Baby Got Track team from Jubilee Pocket, comprising Shannon Murphy, Jenna Jackson and Sarah Roser, took the win from Hamilton Island's Kaira Biss and Tahlia Patterson, while the 'Teacher Trio from Hell' team of Cannonvale State School fame, Joleen Tirendi, Annette Munckton and Wendy Henshaw, took third. Hamilton Island's Tash Helsham, Matt Barras and Ethan Turner, as the Beer, Guts and Coconutz team claimed third in the Mixed Division behind Sydney's Woodstock Runners
