Lucky escape for young driver
POLICE are investigating whether alcohol was a factor in an accident early on Tuesday morning.
An 18-year-old Jubilee Pocket man and his passenger landed over the side of a cliff at the northern entry to Airlie Beach.
The Holden Commodore was heading along Shute Harbour Road toward Cannonvale from Airlie Beach at about 5.50am when the driver failed to execute the bend in the road and veered onto the other side, over the cliff near the Airlie Beach welcome sign.
Whitsunday Police officer in charge sergeant Steve O'Connell said it was a lucky escape for the driver and his 14-year-old female passenger.
“The car was caught by some trees which stopped it rolling down on to Shingley Drive,” he said.
It took fire fighters about an hour to free the man who was trapped by the legs in the wreckage.
They had to secure the car with a winch before getting the man out.
Paramedics treated and transported both the driver and the passenger to Proserpine Hospital in a stable condition.
The car was retrieved at about 10am.
Traffic was temporarily disrupted throughout the morning while the rescue took place.
