Lucky escape from school bus

A TOTAL of 19 school children were removed from the driver's window of a bus, which ran off the road at about 7.45am yesterday (Wednesday), on Shute Harbour Road, Jubilee Pocket.

According to witnesses, the driver was reversing back to the bus stop where more children had arrived when the front wheel slipped over the gutter above a storm water drain.

Whitsunday police constable Michael Kaminski, who attended the scene, said the bus door was not usable as an exit due to the roughly two-metre drop into the storm water drain.

"We spoke to people who helped - they had to get the kids out of the driver's window because they couldn't get the rear emergency exit to work," Constable Kaminski said.

All 19 children were evacuated by the time police arrived, with members of the public and visitors to the Airlie Cove caravan park coming to assist.

The bus driver stood down and the children were collected by a replacement bus. Constable Kaminski said police would be starting formal investigations today.
