Attempted robbery 'just a joke'

A WOULD-BE armed robber has apparently had a change of heart almost immediately after threatening a store attendant with a fake gun, according to police.

The employee had not even had a chance to respond to the hold-up on the Gold Coast when the offender suddenly changed his mind, apologised ,and said the gun was a fake and the robbery a joke.

He then fled with only a drink - which he had already paid for.

Police said the man, believed to be about 18 years old, had waited in line behind three other customers in the Robina convenience store about 10.15pm yesterday.

He had handed over money for his drink but when the attendant opened the cash register he allegedly demanded cash.

The attendant refused and it was then the offender pulled out the replica gun from under his jumper and pointed it at the attendant, again demanding cash. Moments later he fled.
