Caloundra bashing accused to stay in custody

UPDATE: A 21-year-old Caloundra man will remain in custody after being arrested over a violent attack on a woman last night.

The man was sporting a badly bruised right eye when he appeared briefly in Maroochydore Magistrates Court this morning on charges of assault occasioning bodily harm, deprivation of liberty, sexual assault and entering a dwelling with intent.

Police will allege the man held a 21-year-old woman hostage while he repeatedly punched and kicked her face and body.

Officers believe the incident occurred about 7pm yesterday in a Maltman St home.

Legal Aid Queensland lawyer Andrew Berneville-Claye acted as duty lawyer and did not apply for bail on the man's behalf.

The matters were adjourned until July 20.

EARLIER: A Sunshine Coast man who police allege held a 21-year-old woman hostage while he repeatedly punched and kicked her face and body will face charges of assault and deprivation of liberty.

Sunshine Coast detectives charged the man from Caloundra overnight.

Police believe the 21-year-old man went to her house in Maltman St in Caloundra at 7pm on Thursday.

When she answered the door, police allege he forced her back inside.

"The woman was then repeatedly punched and kicked about the body and face before she managed to break free and flee the apartment," a police statement said.

The woman knew the man, also 21.

He is due to appear at Maroochydore Magistrates Court this morning.

In total, he will face four charges: deprivation of liberty, assault occasioning bodily harm, indecent assault and entering premises with intent to commit an indictable offence.
