Man on murder charge remains in custody
THE man accused of murdering Goondiwindi woman Alexis Jeffrey in March appeared in the Proserpine Magistrate's Court today and remains in custody.
Robert Ian Trebeck was arrested at a property in Bowen on Saturday.
He was brought to court after spending the weekend in custody.
The 33-year-old is also facing separate charges of assault occasioning bodily harm, failing to leave licensed premises and three counts of obstructing police.
Due to these extra charges, arising from a totally separate incident in Airlie Beach on June 2 - almost three months after Ms Jeffrey was murdered in March - defence solicitor Timothy Wise, from Groves and Clark Solicitors in Ayr, applied for the court to be closed.
Mr Wise submitted it was in the public interest to close the court because hearing the unrelated matters publicly "could be prejudicial moving forward" or ultimately affect the outcome of a future murder trial.
Police prosecutor Elizabeth Smith argued there would have to be "significant issues of public interest" and in this instance that was not the case.
She also said any application to close the court should be "properly grounded", with written submissions made.
"And that's not been done," she said.
Magistrate Haydn Stjernqvist refused the application to close the court, describing it as "novel".
Bail was revoked and Trebeck was remanded in custody.
For the offences from June 2, he will appear in the Proserpine Magistrate's Court on August 18, via a phone link from prison.
The murder charge was transferred back to Goondiwindi where it will be heard next on September 30.
Trebeck will appear by phone or video link.
Alexis Jeffrey, 24, was killed as she walked home in Goondiwindi on March 16.
The body of the mother-of-three was later discovered on the banks of the Macintyre River, just 500 metres from her home.
Trebeck was identified as a person of interest in the investigation after police released CCTV footage of Ms Jeffrey walking down the city's main road with a man.
Trebeck moved away from the Goondiwindi area after Ms Jeffrey's death.
