Man on 17 charges to serve time behind bars
A MAN who was brought to Monday's sitting of the Proserpine Magistrate's Court charged with 17 separate offences, will spend the next nine months behind bars.
Adam James Sharp's offending spree started on February 18, when he was caught stealing boxes of frozen meat from the storage area of McGuire's Hotel, Mackay.
Just one month later at 4.55am on March 22, Sharp was behind the wheel of a red car seen weaving from side to side across a lane on the Bruce Highway. Police described him as intoxicated and slumped in his seat. He was detained and breathalysed, returning a reading of 0.127 per cent. The vehicle he was driving was found to be unregistered and uninsured and further checks revealed his driver's licence had been disqualified in 2012.
On August 15, Sharp broke into a South Mackay home, where he stole alcoholic beverages, consuming some on site, before making off with a basket of clothes, two watches, an iPad, a diamond ring, car keys and the Holden Commodore they belonged to.
At 7.50pm that night, Sharp crashed the stolen car into a parked vehicle located on Milton Street.
Police prosecutor Elizabeth Smith said he walked away from the accident and jumped the fence into a back yard where he was subsequently found.
On this occasion his BAC reading was 0.189.
Further checks revealed he was wanted on a warrant and that his driver's licence was disqualified.
Ms Smith said after his arrest, Sharp became enraged and began kicking and punching the inside of the police car.
Less than two weeks later, Sharp and two co-offenders broke into an address on Juliet Street, Mackay. Ms Smith said Sharp was armed with a metal pole. She said the men stole a television set and left.
At 11am on August 26, Sharp was found by police at a business premises in Mackay. Ms Smith said he was verbally aggressive and threatening and picked up a screwdriver, which he held at police.
After running away from this incident, Sharp next came to the attention of police on August 29 when he stole a Ford Falcon from a Mackay address. At 4.40pm on September 8, he filled the stolen car up with petrol at a service station in Home Hill and drove off without paying the $35.01 bill.
On September 9, he was finally picked up by Proserpine police.
Magistrate Haydn Stjernqvist said there was "a lot of data here to consider".
After some deliberation, he imposed a total period of imprisonment of two years with a parole release date of June 14, 2015.
Sharp was also disqualified from driving for what Mr Stjernqvist estimated would be a minimum of four years, nine months, saying "[the department of] transport will work that out".
He was required to pay $35 restitution for the fuel and $280 for the damage to the back door of McGuire's Hotel and the loss of the frozen meat.
