A MAN wanted cheaper and more quality controlled methyl amphetamines, so he cooked his own.

Matthew Norman Deas found instructions on the internet.

Police came to his Cannonvale address on January 10 last year after a woman had told officers he was "cooking" an unknown substance.

A searched uncovered a clandestine methyl amphetamines lab, as well as a quantity of chemicals and paraphernalia used in the production of the drug

The then 34-year-old was arrested and charged with a co-offender who is still to be dealt with.

Crown prosecutor Brendan Manttan said 10 days later during a random breath test intercept, police searched Deas' vehicle and found more drug related items including more chemicals.

Now 35, he pleaded guilty in the Supreme Court in Mackay to producing and possession charges.

Defence barrister Bronwyn Hartigan said the father of two was a hard worker and had lived a trouble free life until he was introduced to methyl amphetamines while working in Moranbah in 2010.

He'd decided to produce his own to ensure the quality and because it was cheaper, Ms Hartigan said.

At that time, he was using about five points of the drug on a daily basis.

In 2012 he moved to Proserpine after losing his job in Moranbah and had only been living in the Cannonvale home for three weeks prior to being arrested, Ms Hartigan said.

The culmination of a "messy" breakdown, and not being able to work in his trade, had led to this offending. He was self medicating with drugs, Ms Hartigan said.

Deas had been in custody for about eight months, the court was told. He also pleaded guilty to 12 summary offences including disqualified driving, stealing number plates, unlawful use of a motor vehicle, which Justice Duncan McMeekin said "reflects an attitude (that he) just doesn't care".

Deas was jailed for two years, which was suspended immediately. The time in custody was considered as time already served.

The sentenced was suspended so Deas could return to New South Wales to be with his daughters and family. Deas was also disqualified from driving for three years
