POLICE SHOOTING: Officer 'had no other option'

A MAN has been shot dead by police following a siege at a property in the Centenary suburbs in Brisbane's southwest.

A QPS spokesman said they attended an address at Cassowary St, Doolandella, about 5.20am to reports of a man armed with a samurai sword, with children also present in the house.

Inspector Tim Partridge told media the shooting - involving multiple shots from one officer - took place outside the front door of the two-storey home.

"He has run at the officer with a samurai sword," Insp Partridge alleged.

The officer involved was a veteran of the force and held the rank of senior constable.

"He's understandably stressed, but he's comfortable in the fact that he didn't have any other option," Insp Partridge said.

Police are investigating the relationship between everyone in the house, including two women who were inside and were freed without harm.

One of the women freed is the mother of the children and the partner of the man killed.

The second woman freed is of a similar age and was the house maid.

The man was a resident of the house.

Police could not confirm ages of the adults.

The children are all under the age of 10 and have been taken into the care of a relative.

Police have blocked off half of Cassowary Street as they continue to investigate.

It's understood police received a call before 7am about a man behaving erratically inside a home. When police arrived, negotiations began to try and free four children inside.

The man, aged 41, was threatening to smash a mirror but soon after armed himself with a samurai sword.

About 7.45am, police were able to free the last of the children seconds before the man lunged at police with the sword.

He was shot dead.

Several neighbours have said they heard a gunshot early this morning.
