SWIMMING: Whitsundays masters swimmers starred with a series of medal-winning performances at the MSQ State Long Course Championships on the Gold Coast at the weekend.

Four swimmers from the Whitsundays club took part in the event at the Miami pool which attracted 135 masters swimmers from around the state.

Glen McKerley led the way for the club with three gold medals, a silver and a bronze.

McKerley struck gold in the 1500m freestyle, finishing in 23 minutes 14 seconds. He then won the 400m breaststroke (7.07) and the 200m breaststroke (3.20.85).

Annika Grunwald grabbed six bronze medals from six starts, including in the 200m individual medley where she slashed 47 seconds off her previous personal best.

Andrea Mitchell and Di O'Donnell were also among the medals.

Mitchell claimed gold in the 400m IM, finishing in 8.26.34.

O'Donnell produced a number of personal bests and won bronze in the 100m butterfly (2.04.30).

Back on home turf, the Cannonvale Cannons hosted their club championships with 47 swimmers, from six to 16 years of age, lining up on the blocks.

Competition was close in the 10 and 11-year-old age divisions.

Jacob Dewis, 10, Mae Carter-Attwood, 8, and Ellsie Hinton, 7, all wrote their names into the history books with new club records.

Jacob claimed the 50m freestyle title, while Mae and Ellsie put paid to the 25m freestyle records.

The championships also saw 15 upgrade certificates earned, awarded on Club Night. These were presented to swimmers who achieved times to swim up to the next distance.

Emma Smith, Ky Parkinson, Kiarni Hinton and Keiran McGoldrick won blocks of chocolates for times closest to personal bests.

Emma managed the best PB, storming home in 44.4 seconds in the 100m individual medley.
