Matt Gillett's motoring origins
BUY something cheap and sporty with a banging sound system as a first car, then progress to a more sensible family hauler as you get older.
Brisbane Broncos back-rower Matt Gillett's car history has followed a well trodden path, and the NRL ace makes sure his current ride can comfortably carry his brood.
It'll also need to accommodate Matt in comfort too, and at 187cm and over 100kg, a micro car won't be on his shopping list any time soon.
We tore Matt away from State of Origin preparations to tackle our questions about his motoring past, present and future.
What was your first car? First car was a blue 1990 Nissan Pulsar five-speed manual. I was a bit young when I got it so it had a boom box with two 12-inch subs as part of what I thought was a pretty awesome sound system. I sold it to my best mate's brother, and he wrote it off, sadly.
What are you driving now? A Mazda BT-50 ute at the moment. It's a great car for the family as I've got a daughter and two husky dogs. It's easy to throw the dogs in the back, strap the little one in and go to the beach.
What car did your family have while you were growing up? We had a silver Toyota LandCruiser manual. When I was a kid we travelled around Australia, so I've got good memories of being in it. It got stolen in the end.
What's your greatest frustration on the road? Being stuck behind people not going the speed limit. Or worse, two people not going the speed limit and you can't get around them.
Do you have any preferred driving music? I'm a big radio man, so I'll listen to whatever music is on there.
If you were to go anywhere on a road trip where would it be? I'd love to go to America. It's such a massive place and to see sights such as the Grand Canyon would be amazing.
What is your dream car and why? I don't know the name but it's a done-up black ute from the Transformers movie. I'm not sure what it is, but that's the one I want. (We'll help you Matt, it's a GMC TopKick called the Ultimate Class IV TopKick Pickup crew cab pickup truck).
