Measles scare for Proserpine baby

THE measles alert issued at the weekend has hit home for Proserpine mum Sarah Purvis and her nine-month-old son Eddie.

When hearing of the places visited by the 24-year-old Swiss tourist, Ms Purvis was alarmed to learn that relatives staying with her had visited the same doctor surgery in Airlie Beach.

Ms Purvis said her son Eddie had not been immunised against measles.

"I checked that my brother and sister-in-law had been immunised when they were children. They had, so hopefully it should stop there," she said.

"It was a bit of a concern for a nine-month-old baby who hasn't been immunised."

Ms Purvis said the only thing she could do at this stage was to keep an eye out for the symptoms, which includes a cough, fever, red eyes, light sensitivity, muscle aches, runny nose, sore throat and white spots inside the mouth.

The Tropical Public Health Unit issued the alert for Airlie Beach and Proserpine following the diagnosis of the highly infectious disease.

The traveller was infectious between March 11-17 and on Monday was discharged from Proserpine Hospital after being admitted on Saturday.

Public Health Physician Dr Donohue said anyone in Airlie Beach who was not vaccinated or could not verify their immunisation was up to date should contact their GP.

"We know this woman moved through the community while she was infectious, so there have been many opportunities to spread the illness," he said.

The woman has now been released from Proserpine Hospital.
