Meet the new school leaders at St Catherine’s

MORE than 500 students, teachers, support staff and community members attended a whole school mass to honour the new house leaders of St Catherine's Catholic College.

As year 7 will officially become a part of secondary school next year, St Catherine's Catholic College decided to elect house leaders from year 6 and 7 in 2014.

Principal Sharyn Bell said the new house leaders were chosen after taking part in a leadership camp last year in which students explored the characteristics and responsibilities of great leaders.

"After this camp, students had the opportunity to nominate for a leadership role and presented speeches to their peers before voting occurred," she said.

"While these students have an important role in leading assemblies, representing our college at community events and running the student representative council, we consider all year 6 and 7 students to be leaders of our school. Our older students understand that they are responsible for assisting and supporting younger students and teachers throughout the year."

Ms Bell said all house leaders travelled to Mackay last week to take part in the GRIP leadership program to enrich their understanding of the role.

Chairman of St Catherine's school board Nathan Blain presented the new leaders with their badges at the ceremony about two weeks ago. The house leaders of Ignatius are Madi McGoldrick and Charlotte Orenshaw, with Ned Barbara and Kim Azul leading Xavier.

Tori Mansfield and Callam Ogilvie-Alcock are the house leaders of Frayne while Zayne Taylor-Crane and Ayla Ovari will lead McAuley this year. Father Bill Busuttin celebrated the mass which was held at the Father Tom Gard Centre on Wednesday, February 12. All in attendance were invited to receive communion at the end of the ceremony.
