Men’s club’s future remains uncertain

IT WAS a gloomy and wet Tuesday morning but not inside the Carbon Store in Cannonvale.

Instead hand saws were ripping through timber and most importantly the barbie was heating up.

There was a certain buzz in the air as men were making cuppas, laughing and lending a hand.

After an extraordinary three years, the Men's Club of Airlie Beach is about to leap into the unknown as they leave the Carbon Store mid next month.

Due to future developments at the Carbon Store, all occupants must vacate the premises.

While New Wave Irrigation are looking forward to their move to Carlo Dr, Airlie Beach's Men's Shed is feeling a little lost.

Member Steve Halter is concerned that if the group find nowhere to relocate, they'll eventually have to close down.

"If we put our stuff in storage, it'll never come out," he said. The group are putting a call out to the community they've always helped to return the favour and help find them a new home.

"An empty building, shed, even land and we could build our own workplace - we don't need much, just something to accommodate the functions of Men's Shed," president Bob Bristow said.

The most remarkable thing about Men's Shed is that it is a weekly place for men to get together.

With 32 members from ages 32 to 88, it's a chance for them to get out of the house and socialise."It gives us somewhere to come and talk about our well-being. We talk about anything and everything that would probably mean nothing to anyone else. It's a vital group for the community," Mr Bristow said.
