Mercedes teammates’ collision ‘brainless’

MOTORSPORT: Lewis Hamilton will be hoping for more cheers than jeers at this weekend’s British Grand Prix after taking out a controversial win in Austria.

A last-lap coming together between Hamilton and Mercedes teammate Nico Rosberg led to the Brit being booed by the pro-German crowd after they and Germany’s Rosberg blamed Hamilton for turning in on him and causing the accident.

Hamilton disagreed and so – it seems – did stewards, who handed Rosberg a post-race 10-second time penalty for causing the collision and a reprimand for continuing with a damaged car.

Mercedes boss Toto Wolff described the collision as “brainless”, without saying who was to blame.

He did tell reporters, however, he might consider imposing so-called “team orders” in the future.

“I’m fed up with trying to analyse it,” he said after the latest in a number of incidents involving the Mercedes drivers.

“I just don’t want any contact (between them) any more. Collisions between teammates is a no-go for everyone.”
