Midnight golf in a northern land

EVERY year amateur and professional golfers from around the world descend on the small town of Akureyri in Iceland for the extraordinary experience of playing a round of midnight golf.

Home of the northernmost 18-hole course in the world, Akureyri hosts the Arctic Open Golf Championship, which is played on a stunningly scenic course under a flaming midnight sun.

During the event the sun sets into Eyjafjordur Bay, but rises shortly afterwards to herald a new day.

This serious but social event is a 36-hole stableford tournament, with prizes for handicap and scratch scores, ladies, and over 55s.

The event has one added bonus - players do not have to worry about darkness cramping their style because the sun barely dips below the horizon.

The events runs from June 23-25, at Akureyri, Iceland.
