Midnight makeover for Airlie main street

THERE was no fairy godmother turning rags to gowns, mice to horses or pumpkins to carriages - just two men from Etwell Commercial Cleaners performing their own makeovers on the Airlie Beach main street without the midnight deadline.

In fact, midnight is when the magic happens.

Etwell's clean-up operation, now under way, was organised by Whitsunday Regional Council, which agreed it was long overdue.

The works began on Monday and are expected to last the week, with cleaning running from midnight to around 7.30am. On Tuesday morning Etwell Commercial Cleaners had already water blasted the entire left side of the street.

"It's going good so far. One more side to go," worker Mick Leo joked.

"It certainly gets you out of bed," his colleague Malcolm Thompson added.

Mayor Jennifer Whitney said the clean-up was part of an annual street clean program organised by council throughout the Whitsundays.

"The Airlie Beach main street has not had a big clean since the reconstruction of new pavements so it's well overdue," she said.

Cr Whitney said the pressure cleaning was taking place nightly to minimise disruptions to local businesses.

"(And) I would like to thank the community for their patience over the week," she said. "Just like other main     streets in the Whitsundays, we've got a great asset here in Airlie Beach and need to ensure it keeps clean."
