Mikey's song of hope for Somalia

EVERY minute 21 children under the age of five die in Third World countries from starvation or preventable diseases.

For 11-year-old Lara St Clair, of Sippy Downs, being bombarded by the heartbreaking images of the Somalian crisis on the news was too much to bear.

"I'm glad it's not me," she said to her family.

After hearing his daughter say this, 67-year-old songwriter-producer Mikey St Clair decided he would use his pull in the music industry to try to raise some money for Africa and, more specifically, Somalia.

"I teach my kids to be thankful for the life they have, but it was time to be more active," he said.

"There needs to be more awareness and money generated."

The father-of-three and co-founder of Songcrew International wrote the song for Somalia, Where Are You Now, in one hour in the back of his car in the garage.

He said writing the heartfelt and emotive song was the easy part.

"It was the beginning of a long and arduous journey," he said.

"Getting exposure has been the hardest thing. The process has encompassed many late nights of recording here in Sippy Downs, Greece, the UK and Canada.

"The whole thing was constructed solely on the net."

The song can be bought on iTunes for $1.69 with all proceeds going to relief organisations in Somalia.

"It takes just $1 to feed a child for a week," Mikey said.
