Mill expected to crush all cane in 2016

DESPITE delays to the 2016 cane crush, Wilmar's Proserpine mills expects to process the entire crop before the wet season forces the mill to cease operation.

Proserpine Cane Supply Manager Ron Worth said the mill had crushed about 402,000 tonnes of cane for the season which represents about 23 per cent of the total cane crop.

"About 1.3 million tonnes of cane remains to be harvested based on the district's current crop estimate of 1.71 million tonnes," he said.

Wilmar say despite the forced shut down of the Proserpine mill for two weeks in July and a couple of false starts at the beginning of the crush there is still an allowance for further wet weather delays.

Rain of up to 45mm in parts of the district last week caused some interruptions to cane harvesting.

Crushing disruptions were minimised thanks to close cooperation between the milling and harvesting sectors, Mr Worth said.

During the downtime when there was no cane available to crush Wilmar invested in maintenance and say the mill "is performing well overall" adding "this is due largely to the factory improvements carried out by Wilmar Sugar over the past four years".

Average CCS levels have levelled off and measured 12.73 last week.

This is more than one unit lower than the budgeted level for this time of the year, Mr Worth said on Monday.
