Milnes win Christmas light comp
PROSERPINE residents Harry and Fay Milne were the winners of the Whitsunday Times Christmas Light Competition.
Suspending red claw pots from their trees, synchronising their lights and going that little bit extra was what wowed the judges and made the Milnes stand out from the rest and they were awarded $300 from competition sponsors Ergon Energy for their efforts.
The second and third prize winners will receive $100 each from Ergon Energy.
A total of 13 families entered the competition and were judged on their originality, creativity and use of colour.
The Milnes have been decorating their home and garden for the past 12 years and said it was a bonus for them to have won the competition this year.
"We do it for the children," Mrs Milne said.
"We have seven grandchildren and love seeing their reactions when they see the lights."
What started out as a string of lights along the roof of the Milne's home has turned into a mini wonderland with lights lining the bushes along the front of their home as well as Christmas characters in their garden and on their roof.
They even had a train set included in their display.
"We get at least one new light each year and try to put them in different spots," Mrs Milne said.
"We buy them online on eBay and at BigW."
Using eight different power boxes and a mixture of LED and solar lights, the total light display took the Milne's between one week and 10 days to set up.
"We check the bulbs and make sure we have the timing of the lights right," Mr Milne said.
"Every year it gets harder to put them up but we will keep doing it for as long as we can."
