RUGBY UNION

THE 2013 representative rugby season is only around the corner and the Mackay Stingers have a busy schedule for both their senior and under-19s teams this year.

There are three matches for the seniors scheduled, April 6 away against Cairns, April 14 against Mt Isa in Airlie Beach and April 27 versus Townsville in Mackay.

The under-19s are only playing two matches against Cairns and Townsville as curtain-raisers.

The squads have only had two training sessions so far due to coaching vacancies and other issues so will be in for a real challenge with limited preparation time.

Coaches for the senior Stingers are Phil Papanicolaou from Mackay Rugby and Damian Royan from Kuttabul Rugby with under-19s coaches Damian Quinn and Todd Wallace from Mackay City.

There are still opportunities to be selected for both teams at this stage especially the 19s, training sessions are being conducted on Monday and Wednesday nights to avoid clashes with club training and there will be two Sunday sessions held on March 17 and 24 to accommodate the players from Whitsunday and Bowen clubs who are both playing club matches in Mackay those weekends. Head coach Phil Papanicolaou has expressed his desire to hold at least one session in Airlie Beach to assist Bowen and Whitsunday squad members with travel.

Anyone interested in playing for the Stingers in 2013 and possibly going on to be selected for Queensland Country and beyond the opportunity is there contact.

Anyone interested in getting involved and trying out for either team should call Phil Papanicolaou on 0411 984 328 for details.
