Mountain bikers to break in new tracks

WHITSUNDAY mountain biking fans will be able to test their mettle on a new series of trails from Sunday.

The mountain bike specific trails are the product of a partnership between Whitsunday Mountain Bike Club and Big4 Airlie Cove Resort & Caravan Park which began in 2014.

Signed off in 2015, the new $40,000 trails will provide safe junior development options, as well as attracting more cyclists to the region.

Rated 'blue' under the International Mountain Bike Association standards, the trails are ideal for first time riders, riders over 10-years-old and experienced riders alike.

Interested riders can join the club on the day, with a free two-month trail membership on offer.

The day will begin with an information session at 9am, followed by a ribbon cutting at 10am and a barbecue at 10.30am.

There's also the chance to win a swag of awesome prizes from a number of local tourism operators.

The trails will be open to riders until 6pm.

Local riders are asked to ride their bikes where possible as car parking is limited.
