Mum sobs as son avoids more jail time for crimes
A MAN who set fire to his car outside Proserpine Police Station in 2012 has been told he was lucky not to be charged with arson.
Tyrel William Cameron, 34, was charged with a string of crimes following the incident and appeared in Proserpine Magistrate's Court on Monday for sentencing having already spent 99 days behind bars.
Cameron was charged with lighting an unauthorised fire, failing to take steps to put it out and being on police grounds without a lawful excuse.
He also faced charges of possessing dangerous drugs and utensils, contravening a police order, wilful damage, obstructing police, breaching bail conditions and contravening a domestic violence order on six different dates.
At about 11pm on January 7, 2012, Cameron parked his Holden Commodore sedan behind two marked police cars at Proserpine Police Station.
It is believed he lit a fire in the front of the car before fleeing the scene.
A day later, Cameron set fire to furniture at his Dobbins Lane address.
When police tried to speak with him he locked himself inside the house and caused a siege situation.
After a four-day saga of court appearances in which lawyers, medical assessors and police were involved, Cameron was remanded in custody.
Defence solicitor Lachlan Ygoa-McKeown said Cameron was now on his "best run" since last appearing before the court.
He said Cameron had apologised to police in late 2013.
Magistrate Haydn Stjernqvist conceded that Cameron had not reoffended between 2012-14 and that the two offences from late last year, including a breach of bail, had involved alcohol.
He also took into consideration the 99 days already served.
Cameron was fined $440 for breaching bail and contravening the domestic violence order.
There was no further punishment for the eight offences from 2011-12.
Cameron was supported in court by his mother, who sobbed as the sentence was handed down.
