Muppets tackle showbiz starting Tuesday

THE Muppets get the Modern Family treatment in a new show coming to our screens.

Jim Henson's beloved cast of puppets, who recently enjoyed a revival on the big screen, are back in one of the few new summer offerings on free-to-air television (aside from sport).

Miss Piggy plays a volatile late-night talk-show host who keeps her production staff on their toes with her mood swings, which have been colour coded in a security threat level-style system.

Kermit is her beleaguered executive producer and ex-boyfriend who must try to manage her, the often troublesome celebrity guests and the other various personalities of the office.

And it seems plenty of celebrities are lining up for cameos in the show.

The first few episodes have Josh Groban playing a guest-turned-love-interest, Laurence Fishburne heckling Kermit, Liam Hemsworth helping Gonzo with online dating and Reese Witherspoon feuding with Miss Piggy.

The show uses the same understated mockumentary style of shows like Modern Family, The Office and Parks and Recreation.

The approach brings The Muppets fully into the adult entertainment realm, with snarky off-the-cuff remarks and to-camera confessions used effectively.

As someone who grew up on The Muppets as a kid in the States, this show certainly appeals to my nostalgia for the original show and plays on the already established personalities of characters such as Fozzie Bear, Animal and the Swedish Chef.

The music is contained to Miss Piggy's show, during which she performs with the likes of Groban and Joseph Gordon-Levitt, and Animal's drumming showdown with Dave Grohl of the Foo Fighters has already gone viral.

The gang is all grown up, it seems, and their showbiz exploits make for entertaining holiday viewing.

The Muppets premieres with two episodes on Tuesday at 7.30pm on Channel 7.
