My Secret Playlist

Each week My Secret Playlist invites their favourite bands and musicians to give a rundown on eight of their favourite songs right now. Today's playlist comes from talented solo troubadour, Jordie Lane.

Kathleen Edwards / Back To Me
I couldn’t stop playing this record from the Canadian songwriter for months. And the title track is gold. With a Subterranean Home Sick Blues, Dylanesque’ groove. It’s got great lyrical wit and fuel for the fire of a great vengeful break-up song.

Karen Dalton / It Hurts Me Too
My God, she must have one of the most strikingly beautiful and heartbreaking voices. She hits at the core of human emotions with this simple and raw recording of this classic tune.

Old Crow Medicine Show / Down Home Girl

These guys were a big inspiration to a duo I’m in called Fireside Bellows. This song was our favourite. Great dirty grinding groove, with rock n’ roll attitude, and harp solo, but all on acoustic bluegrass instrumentation. There’s this intense manic vibe that I love, but at the same time it’s lazy and carefree. I was just at a 60s-themed basement party on the weekend and heard the 1964 original New Orleans soul/r&b version by Alvin Robinson. That’s damned good, too.

Brendan Welch / Two Street Corners
There’s such a great feel in this track. I’m not sure if this song is on a record or not. I found it on MySpace. His voice so rich and moody, his lyrics intriguing and dark. It’s like you’ve somehow tapped into this guy’s meandering thoughts.

Downhills Home / Wolves In The Woods

One of my favourite Aussie bands. I love the dual harmony guitar drones that float through this song. This is one of their more moody tracks, with a great tremolo guitar outro.

Elton John / Ballad Of A Well-Known Gun
When someone told me about the album Tumbleweed Connection I dismissed it as a silly joke. But after they forced me to listen to it, I was very thankful. Every track on the record, including this opener with killer drum and electric guitar intro, is awesome. I hope Elton comes back to his roots soon and does more of this country funk stuff.

Eagle And The Worm / Summer Song
I got a demo of this song from the artist, and I’m not sure if it’s out yet, but keep an eye out and ears open. This guy is a bit of genius. Beautiful string arrangements, Beach Boys-influences with harmonies, and crazy synth programming at the end of the song.

The Jayhawks / All The Right Reasons
I always keep coming back to these guys. Perfect little pop songs I wish I could write, with timeless vocal harmonies and melody. And this song is no exception.
