Natural scenery on computer screens has benefits

FEELING a bit tense sitting at your desk? Maybe a bit sleepy after eating lunch at your computer? Noticing the first signs of industrial flu coming on?

Set your computer background to a wildly natural scene. It works.

QUT academic Eric Brymer said studies had shown just looking at that scene would help relax and refresh.

"Current research has found that being in or just looking at a natural environment has a positive impact on a person's sense of wellbeing," he said.

"For example, one experiment showed that people who ran on a treadmill looking at scenes of nature performed better than those who ran looking at other images."

But Dr Brymer said the best benefits, of course, came when people were truly involved in the natural world whether that was walking through bushland, hiking a mountain to witness a beautiful view or simply growing herbs in a garden.
