NBN tower concern
NBN tower concern
I AM writing concerning the proposed NBN tower for Dororthy Road and in response to last week's article (Whitsunday Times, March 14).
Firstly, I am not against progress through better communications but strongly feel the public should be aware that one of the proposed sites for the NBN tower was on council owned land.
An income is generated by lease through having a tower situated on your land and feel that the community and rate payers whether for against the NBN or tower locations should benefit through this financially as a whole.
The NBN tower leases are estimated to be around six to eight thousand dollars annually and are renewed each five years
Further income streams are obtainable by the subletting of space on the towers by other carriers.
The council already has a tower located in the water treatment area of Blue Bay Industrial Estate and in my view this tower also would contribute to further income stream for the rate payers/council.
One of the three proposed sites was rejected on grounds it would be not suitable because of transmission constraints but was not the case for the council owned property or the Dororthy Road property.
The tower has no known life span or amount of aerials it may have on it further than just the NBN.
This is concerning for myself and other neighbors.
The first proposed site was situated and submitted to council without my consent or knowledge on my property in Buttermans Road Riordanvale by NBN or their representatives and caused angst for myself and neighbors.
It has caused confusion for people.
Many of us including developers are under flora covenants with our land holdings and the NBN has guidelines that they will not place development in areas of environmental significance of which many of us believe they are. Some of the reasons of which those protesting the tower are also those used by the NBN in not placing the tower on the council selected site and is why many feel the DA is in fact flawed.
Further more I was approached by a company APW Wireless an American tower company to lease the tower.
There is a concern that the sky real estate speculation is driving away from council's and government and from existing infrastructure to benefit this speculation and proliferation of more towers in as much new property around Australia they can gain to feed this growing industry.
The NBN is proposed to go private into the future and I don't see any reason why areas around our country should not benefit from these towers financially for the future through our government establishments outside of private sector and into our local communities instead of being off shored more than many may wish to see.
