Nev the dog takes a bow for degree in patience

IT IS not too often you hear of a dog graduating from university. But Nev is no ordinary golden labrador.

The five year old is the eyes of legally blind University of the Sunshine Coast student Nicole Damarra, who has completed a Bachelor of Social Science degree.

The devoted pair joined more than 300 graduates proudly dressed in gowns and caps to walk across the stage and receive their degrees yesterday.

Ms Damarra, 31, said Nev attended every lecture and tutorial over the past three years.

"Nev has been a very patient study companion throughout the degree," Ms Damarra said.

"However, in some lectures he wasn't able to help himself from letting everyone know how bored he was by making the odd whine or sigh.

"I wouldn't have been able to do it without him and I think he's very happy to settle into retirement before I start my Honours in 2014."

Nev's graduation gown and cap were made by Audrey Dickson of USC's Student Life and Learning.
