New ANZAC memorial built at Dingo Beach

A NEW memorial to honour the fallen this ANZAC Day has been erected at Dingo Beach as a result of the community spirit and perseverance of local resident Joseph Howie.

Mr Howie was recently awarded a scholarship by the Returned and Services League (RSL) Youth Development Program for his application to develop an ANZAC memorial at Dingo Beach.

The annual program is run by Bond University and the RSL which awards students with a scholarship to achieve their goals in the areas of sport, academics or community involvement.

As a 2013 graduate of Mackay's Whitsunday Anglican School, Mr Howie took advantage of his school's strong involvement in the local community to help develop his project.

After more than 12 months of planning, discussion with local council and the Dingo Beach community, Mr Howie has successfully provided somewhere permanent for local residents to come and pay their respects to the ANZAC soldiers.

He achieved the project by ensuring every expense was accounted for through the grant from item prices to the fabrication of a flagpole by local business Strathdickie Engineering.

Through the voluntary work of his father and the perfect rock put in place by Rhino Dave, Mr Howie's project is now standing tall on the foreshore of Dingo Beach.
