"THE right word is privileged."

That's how Cannonvale State School principal Angie Kelly feels about the school's new junior learning precinct.

"I'd almost have to say words can't describe it because I know that across the state many schools would be beside themselves to get this happening for them," she said.

With work having begun on the $6 million project on Friday morning, a three-year journey is coming to fruition.

Ms Kelly said it all began when she realised the school was growing at a rapid rate.

"On my very first day I contacted the regional office and gave them my assessment.

"I asked them if they could pop down and do an audit on the capacity of our school.

"The other thinking I had was that I really hadn't seen for a very long time a model where a Prep facility was separate from the school."

After a lengthy process of auditing, consultation, drafting and approvals, the precinct is now on track to be finished by the end of the year and opened in 2017.

Education Minister Kate Jones said the two-storey complex, paid for by the Palaszczuk Government, would be a welcome addition to the fast growing school, which had enrolled more than 680 students in Prep to Year 6 this year.

"The new building design has been developed in consultation with the school and the Parents and Citizens' Association to ensure the best educational outcomes and value for money," she said.

Ms Kelly meanwhile described the building as "the beginning of the journey of future proofing our school".

"We're putting together a physical facility that's going to enhance learning; not just now, but into the future," she said.

"Currently we are at capacity and we're still enrolling."

School captains Velvet and Jonathan Heatley said they were excited about the project.

"More kids around Cannonvale can get educated at this school," Jonathan said.

"(And) more people are coming into Cannonvale," Velvet added.
