New care facilities for fauna rescue

FAUNA Rescue Whitsunday has received $3753 as part of the Queensland grants program called "caring for our community".

The volunteer organisation retrieves and looks after sick, injured and orphaned wildlife in the Whitsunday region just like eastern grey joey, Willow.

A cane farmer at the south of Proserpine found Willow after her mother was killed.

She was in the temporary care of fauna rescue member Maria Simpson until the group found her somewhere more permanent.

President of fauna rescue Jacqui Webb is excited for the group's grant approval.

"I'm really really excited, it's always good to get a grant application approved and to know we can now get the facilities to appropriately care for the animals," she said.

The association plans to use the grant to build facilities for the intermediate and critical care and rehabilitation of bats and birds.

Fauna Rescue has an average 70 to 100 members who contribute in a number of ways. "Some are involved in the direct foster care of the animals, some even sew handmade pouches for the joeys and wallabies, there's lots of way to be involved," Ms Webb said.

Whitsunday MP Jason Costigan is pleased fauna rescue was one of three successful grant applicants in his electorate.

"Fauna rescue do an amazing job in our community looking after injured and sick wildlife, not only around Proserpine and Airlie Beach but further afield. Many may not be aware but they have helpers and carers in places like Collinsvale, Mackay, Bowen and all over the place."

If you see a sick or injured animal call fauna rescue's 24-hour hotline on 4947 3389.

Campus Whitsunday and Proserpine Youth Space were also successful grant applicants.
