New journo in town

DIRECT to the Whitsundays from beyond the black stump, journalist Kathryn Cygan joined the team at the Whitsunday Times this week.

Having previously worked at an independent newspaper in Blackall before moving to the Whitsundays at the start of the year, Kathryn said she was looking forward to meeting people, getting more involved with the community and telling their stories.

"Living in Blackall, it was a very small, tight-knit community and so it has been very different moving here, where the population is larger and more transient," Kathryn said.

"There's also less red dirt on my car," she joked.

For as long as she can remember, Kathryn had always wanted to live in the Whitsundays.

"In my eyes it's always been that perfect paradise - and so far it has been," she said.

Kathryn enjoys writing community interest and feature stories that give her the opportunity to get to the heart of the issue.

Whitsunday Times editor Sharon Smallwood welcomed Kathryn to the team and said she was looking forward to working with her.

"We're very excited to have Kathryn on board," she said.
