New manager to help grow events in the Whitsundays

EVENTS held in the Whitsundays should get a boost in the next six months as a new project manager for events has started work at Whitsundays Marketing and Development (WMD).

Ms Ellis holds a Bachelor of Business in Event Management and Marketing and has been the co-ordinator of the Townsville Triathlon Festival since 2010, growing the festival from three events to seven over two days with 6000 participants.

She has also had experience with a range of other events including Julia Creek's Dirt and Dust Festival and the Over 40's Rock Concert in Townsville, and writing the marketing and business plan for the Burdekin Sugar Rush Festival.

Ms Ellis said she was excited about the role and said she had a real passion for events and the benefits they could bring to a region.

"I am really looking forward to working with events of all sizes and types and having the Whitsundays recognized as a hub of activity throughout the year through a series of events."

Ms Ellis moved here from Townsville and started work on Monday.

Chief executive officer Danial Rochford said WMD (formerly Tourism Whitsundays) had undertaken an audit of the region's events in 2011 and developed a strategy to grow the benefits of events to the local economy. "Events are a huge opportunity to grow our share of the tourism pie, and since the creation of an events attraction strategy in 2011 our organisation has been looking for opportunities to commence it's implementation," Mr Rochford said.

Ms Ellis will not be running events but will assist event managers across the region from Bowen to Proserpine, Airlie Beach, Collinsville and the islands, to build their skills and grow their events.

"Ultimately we'd like to see this as a permanent role within our organisation to ensure the longer term growth of events in the region."

The new events manager will have three main goals in her role over the next six months:

1. To co-ordinate a full and complete events calendar for the region that can be fed to various websites that promote events and tourism;

2. To identify several local events that have the potential to grow into more major events that will attract additional tourists to the region;

3. To identify opportunities to bring new events to the Whitsundays.
