New priest in town

THERE is a new face at Proserpine's Anglican Church, with a mission to make the world a better place.

Taking over from Father Chris Yule, who retired due to health issues, Father Honorio Hincapie has been in the region for three months.

"The community here is wonderful and so resilient," he said.

"Our congregation is ageing and I have a plan to engage younger families."

Hailing from Colombia, Fr Hincapie came to Australia as a Roman Catholic priest in January 1999.

However in 2011 he made the decision to leave the church as he disagreed with some of their practices.

"I found the Anglican church in 2013 and it coincided with my beliefs - things like women should be allowed to be priests and priests should be allowed to be married," he said.

Fr Hincapie is volunteering at Proserpine Nursing Home, Proserpine Hospital and has partnered with other churches to read scripture in primary schools.

"I'm from Latin America so I love soccer, I'd love to get involved in it here," he said.
