New raceway to open this weekend
EVERYTHING is on track for the grand opening of the new Whitsunday Raceway and Driver Education Training Facility this Sunday.
A big line-up is planned for the day starting with former world super sport champion motorcycle racer Chris Vermeulen who will be riding the first ever laps at the new track.
Whitsunday Motosport Club president Andrew Auld said it was unfortunate Queensland Supermoto state champion Ross Taylor would not be able to make it to the event because his bikes were stuck in northern New South Wales after the floods.
"We will have two Queensland champions coming down from Townsville to ride at the event instead," he said.
Auld invited everyone to come along and check out the new track facilities.
"It will be a good opportunity for different bodies who have donated money to see where it was spent," he said.
Whitsunday Motosports Club member and rider James Dwight said the club was expecting about 300 people to attend the event from across the state. "It's not just going to be about cars and bikes, there will be a V8 car display, quad bikes, two drift cars and information for driver training," he said.
Twelve trade displays will also be set up on the day for all on-lookers.
Entry is free and a licensed bar and food will be available.
"We hope people realise the district now has a terrific community facility and that locals can come and have a look at how motorsports can be held in a safe and fun environment," Dwight said.
