New raffle record met

THE Rotary Club of Airlie Beach is celebrating its most successful community raffle to date, with record numbers of dollars raised, tickets sold and people taking part.

A staggering $128,274 was raised for the local community, compared to last year's record result of $95,623.2012. An impressive 115 non-profit organisations sold tickets this year, up on last year's 89.

Community raffle organiser Neil Cawthorne said every ticket-selling region sold more tickets this year than ever before, with the 16 prizes the highest number since the raffle started 14 years ago.

The raffle draw was held on Monday night at the Jubilee Tavern in the presence of PCYC branch manager Sergeant John Dickinson and 193 attendees. First prize of a Kimberly cruise valued at over $14,000 was won by orthopaedic surgeon Michael McGuire, with the winning ticket sold by the Royal Flying Doctor Service. Mr McGuire, who is based on the Gold Coast, said he intends to make a personal donation of $5000 to RFDS.

A separate raffle was also held on the night and won by Stan Wright, who scored $729 for the Whitsunday Aero Club. Mr Cawthorne said a big thank you to all who participated in the raffle. "And last but not least my best mate and wife Narelle for all her assistance with the many aspects of the raffle," he said.
