New stations officer for Airlie Beach firies
STEPPING up from his role as leading firefighter, Kevin Tomas has been welcomed by the Queensland Fire and Emergency Service as the new Airlie Beach branch station officer. The role will require Mr Tomas to oversee day-to-day duties and the general management of the station on top of regular firefighter responsibilities. Mr Tomas has been working in the firefighter industry for 10 years, seven of them as a full time firefighter.
Career highlights to date are the community-based events the branch takes part in and the education seminars they conduct at local schools.
"Not many of our jobs get a happy ending so it's great to make a positive impact on a young person's life," he said.
In his new role, Mr Tomas would like to focus on the career development of up and coming firefighters through encouragement and more extensive training. He would also like to continue educating Whitsunday residents about the dangers of bush fires and the need to be proactive. "We really embrace 'prepare, act, survive' and that's a message I want to further get out," Mr Tomas said.
