New voting location ticks all the boxes
PARKING, access and spacious booths were just some of the improvements voters noticed when they arrived at St Catherine's College Loyola Campus to vote this morning.
With pre-polling held at the Proserpine Courthouse throughout the week and on election day in previous years, many locals agreed the location wasn't practical and this year, things have changed.
Officer in Charge Cheryl McBride has worked at polling booths for 10 years and said the new location was "fabulous".
"There's better parking, easier access and bigger booths," she said.
"At the end we've got more room to count and at the courthouse you're just on top of each other."
Despite the pros seemingly outweighing the cons, Ms McBride said there were still some downsides.
"When you say voting is at St Cath's, people don't know which campus it is so just saying it's at St Cath's is a bit broad," she said.
"It's frustrating when the polling is in a different place almost every year."
For Julie Scanlon, a volunteer at St Catherine's, previously voting at the courthouse meant there were problems with parking.
"There always used to be issues with clogging up the streets with cars because there was just nowhere to park," she said.
"People don't seem to like change but the courthouse was just too small."
Voters also seem to be on board with the new location, with local of 35 years, Richard Davey agreeing it was a smart move.
"I managed to find it just fine and it's such better parking," he said.
"There's a better space too and way more room to vote."
