New website brings Whitsunday food to your fingertips

THE age-old debate over what to have for dinner can be a point of contention in many Whitsunday households.

But two Airlie Beach foodies have come to the rescue with a new online platform set to be a one stop shop for gastronomists and indecisive eaters alike.

Whitsunday Menu, which will launch next month, is a website that will give residents an insight into what’s cooking in kitchens across Airlie Beach.

The website will have a directory of up-to-date menus for participating restaurants, daily specials and sneak peeks of signature dishes.

It will also provide the latest deals from partnering eateries and information on delivery broken down by suburb.

By compiling the food options in Airlie Beach into one place, Whitsunday Menu co-founder Alex Dakin hoped the region’s distinct food scene would be thrust into the spotlight.

“The islands are amazing and there’s so much to do out there, which is really well known, but what’s not well known is the food culture there is on land,” he said.

“There’s a lot of hidden gems that people may not know about.

“We noticed something (was) missing - one place where everyone could find all the information on the food and beverages in the region where it’s clearly laid out, user friendly, up to date and attractive.”

Fellow co-founder Jono Press described the website as similar to UberEats, but without the delivery option, where residents can browse what’s on offer in restaurants from the comfort of their couch.

He also hoped the website would help businesses market themselves further afield in places like Townsville and Mackay in a bid to draw more visitors.

More than 40 Airlie Beach eateries have already jumped on board Whitsunday Menu in the three months since the idea was born.

Mr Dakin hoped that as word got out, Whitsunday Menu could play a key role in helping the region’s food scene come alive again after a difficult few months with coronavirus restrictions.

“Our aim is to lift the region,” he said.

“We’re hoping we can help local restaurants and bring people and restaurants together and create a community hub.

“There’s anything and everything to do with food, and our aim is to basically make the town busier because it’s been a tough time in many respects, and we hope this can get out there and help.”

The website is still under construction and set to launch in mid-August but you can follow the updates and get a insight into some of the best dishes in the region on the Whitsunday Menu Facebook page.
