Newman will win Ashgrove: Howard

FORMER Prime Minister John Howard says he has no lessons from the 2007 loss of his seat to pass on to LNP leader Campbell Newman, saying he is going to win both Ashgrove and the election.

Mr Howard joined Mr Newman on the election campaign trail in Brisbane today to give a speech to the party faithful at St Peter Chanel Catholic School in The Gap, in the Ashgrove electorate.

When asked by reporters if Mr Howard saw any parallels between his 2007 federal election loss of Bennelong (to former ABC journalist Maxine McKew) and Mr Newman's fight in Ashgrove - in that they were both being "stalked" by potential giant-killers - Mr Howard said he did not.

"No, I'm a bit lost on the analogy," he said. "He will win Ashgrove, he'll do better than I did, he will actually win, I didn't, I lost my seat on the night of the 2007 Bennelong election. I'm fairly relaxed and comfortable about it now though."

Mr Howard continued Mr Newman's line that the Labor party had sustained a continued smear campaign against him but was unable to offer any thoughts on Labor policies, such as their hallmark Mines to Minds plan.
