No bail for alleged sex shop drug trafficker

MACKAY woman Melinda Slingsby is alleged to have sold drugs from her sex shop business and is accused of being involved in drug trafficking ring.

And because she was on bail at the time of these alleged offences, a Supreme Court judge has ruled that she remain behind bars.

Melinda Anne Slingsby, 42, has been behind bars for about two weeks after she was arrested during a police operation targeting drug trafficking.

The Mackay businesswoman applied for bail on Thursday.

Despite an offer to pay $20,000 surety, Supreme Court Justice David Boddice said there was a risk she would re-offend if released.

The court heard she was on bail for other offences but allegedly continued to sell drugs.

The court also heard she allegedly sold synthetic marijuana from her sex shop business.

She is also accused of selling MDMA between March and June this year.

Supreme Court Judge David Boddice said she admitted in a sale to undercover police officers that she had made a huge profit from selling marijuana in the past two years.

Police searched her house and business on June 16 and she was arrested and charged after officers allegedly found drugs in her house.

The court heard Ms Slingsby was prepared to report to police and abide by a curfew as bail conditions but Justice Boddice said there no conditions that could be imposed to satisfy him she would not re-offend.

"It is alleged after she had been placed on bail she continued to sell drugs, including significant quantities of MDMA," he said.

Justice Boddice said that; plus her history and previous non-compliance with bail; rendered her an unacceptable risk.

The court heard she could remain behind bars for more than a year until the court case is ready to proceed.
