Nomads support RV
AFTER an overwhelming ground swell of positive feedback about the announcement of a possible RV rest stop site, the Guardian caught up with some travellers and picked their brains on the topic.
Jenny and Noel Rankin live in Bendigo, Victoria, but spend a good percentage of the year on the road living in a caravan.
They are what people affectionately refer to as grey nomads.
This year, when passing through the Proserpine area, they stopped in with their long-time friend and fellow seasoned traveller Noeleen McCleery, who lives 20km south of Proserpine.
Ms Rankin has travelled almost the complete distance of the east coast, from just north of Melbourne to northern Queensland just south of Proserpine, and said she didn't recall there being a stretch of road as long as the one between Mackay and Bowen that didn't have some kind of driver reviver.
Ms McCleery agreed it was unusual.
"You don't plan to travel big distances, it's all about resting and taking it easy,” she said.
Ms Rankin said the proposed RV stop and driver reviver had the potential to be a huge boon for the pubs and retail outlets in Proserpine.
"You do use the shopping centres, you will go to the bakery, you will go and have coffee and go to the supermarket,” she said.
"There are so many people on the road in caravans and more and more people are using those stops.”
Ms McCleery said the caravan park in Proserpine catered to a very different need in travellers.
"When you are self-sufficient you only need a resting stop and don't need to go into a caravan park,” she said.
Ms McCleery indicated people believed they would see no economic benefit from the RV stop and this was part of the reason behind opposition to the plan.
"I don't know why people don't encourage it here but it has always been to do with tourism and paid tourism,” she said.
Both women agreed it was the casual nature of an RV stop and the ability to connect with other travellers and share information in a safe place which appealed to the older traveller.
"People of our age are doing RV camping or pulling into these way-side stops, more than going into caravan parks,” Ms Rankin said adding the perfect RV and driver reviver stop would have toilets, rubbish bins and water.
