North Coast cop charged with sex assaults against children

A NORTH Coast police officer has been charged with sexual assault offences against children, dating back more than 20 years.

The officer was yesterday charged with five counts of aggravated sexual assault; one count of aggravated indecent assault; and five counts of aggravated act of indecency.

The Senior Constable has not been named, nor the command he works in identified, beyond it being one "in the Northern Region", which covers from Newcastle to the Queensland border.

However, Police Media has issued a statement saying the officer is alleged to have sexually assaulted two boys in incidents between 1992 and 1994. The boys were aged five and six at the time of the first alleged assault and eight and nine at the time of the last assault.

He was aged in his mid-to-late teens at the time of the alleged offences and was not part of the NSW Police Force.

The officer has been granted conditional bail to appear in Downing Centre Local Court on 10 June 2014.

He has been suspended from duties, with pay.
