NTT test for Airlie’s Trashbags
ROLLER DERBY: A group of Whitsunday roller derby players will take on one of the biggest tournaments in North Queensland this weekend.
The Airlie Beach Trashbags, from the Whitsunday Roller Derby League, will contest the Northern Tropical Thunder event in Townsville starting on Friday.
Airlie Beach will play five of the 12 teams registered over the long weekend, including the top seeded team - the Reef City Roller Girls.
"We've had some excellent training sessions in the lead-up to NTT. We've developed our defensive strategies so far that we think the Reef City girls will get quite a surprise," Sharna "Dee Dee Lishous" Stockham said.
This weekend's event will also be the last time the team operates under the Trashbags name, with a change to come in the next few weeks.
"We love playing this tournament and can't wait to take our Trashbags' uniforms for one last spin," Christina "Storm Surge" Unterwurzacher said.
"We know our local fans have gotten quite attached to the cheeky Trashbags name but with a move towards a co-ed team, a name change has to happen. We can't wait to reveal the new team soon, and invite anyone who is interested in derby, guys and girls, to come and meet with us."
