Off beach sailors take the next training steps

WITH the Winter Series now complete, off beach sailors at the Whitsunday Sailing Club are already looking forward to the next steps.

The Learn to Sail group held their final session on Sunday and next term will progress to Learn to Race.

Two of the group will race in the Laser 4.7 class and the others will learn to race in the club-owned Optimists and Opti tacker class.

The group mingled with off beach racers on Sunday at a barbeque on the Sailing Club's lawns, where Off Beach Commodore Luke Mairs presented the prizes for the Winter Series.

Mr Mairs said he was very pleased to report that 25 skippers had competed in the series' 22 races held over nine weeks.

He noted many of the club's members had jobs with weekend rosters making it impossible for all sailors to compete each Sunday, with participants able to drop five races and still be in with a chance.

In the off beach senior division Mairs took out first place sailing a Laser standard rig, while Johanna and Dennis Winstanley were second in their Tasar and one-design windsurfer.

Youth sailor Cam Brown was third sailing a Laser radial rig.

In the junior division only one point separated Tessa Munster from Aochi Dibbin, with Bonnie Syme and Hayley Dibbin in third and fourth place.

After the barbeque the off beach group held two races, the results of which will be carried forward to the Spring Series starting on July 19.
