Officer bitten in Airlie beach while responding to altercation

A WHITSUNDAY police officer has been bitten while responding to an altercation in Airlie Beach.

At 12.05am, police responded to reports of a street altercation on Shute Harbour Road.

A 32-year-old woman was alleged to have removed signage from a licensed venue before placing it on the road.

When a security guard working at the licensed venue moved to retrieve the sign, it was alleged a 32-year-old Mackay man, who was known to the woman, attacked the security guard.

When police tried to intervene in the altercation, it was believed they restrained the woman and she bit one of the officers on his right bicep.

The 32-year-old Mackay woman has been charged with the serious assault of a police officer by biting and she will appear in the Proserpine Magistrate's Court on Monday, September 19.

The 32-year-old Mackay man has been charged with committing a public nuisance offence and he will appear in the Proserpine Magistrate's Court on the same date.
