Officer pushed while helping

CLINT Brown was walking down the main street of Airlie Beach after an evening of drinking when he came across a police officer helping an unconscious man who had been assaulted.

Brown spotted the officer and decided to get involved.

On Monday, Proserpine Magistrates Court heard that at 1.30am on November 12, Brown had approached the police officer and pushed him back with both hands, causing the officer to stumble back.

When the officer stood up, Brown aggressively lunged towards him before shouting "who the (expletive) are you?”.

The Magistrates Court heart that Brown resisted arrest and it wasn't until a nearby security guard came over that he could be arrested.

He was taken to Whitsunday police station where he was charged with obstructing police and assaulting police and was subsequently released on bail.

Acting Magistrate Ronald Muirhead said although it was not a serious assault, it was "an assault nonetheless”.

Brown, who represented himself, pleaded guilty.

"I was drunk and stupid (and) I do apologise,” he said.

Brown was fined $2000 and ordered to pay $400 compensation to the officer.
