Oil spill in Airlie Beach

OIL from a burst hydraulic system on a Whitsunday Regional Council street cleaning truck spilt onto the outside lane of the round-about on the corner of Coconut Grove and Shute Harbour Rd in Airlie Beach on Saturday.

The street cleaning truck broke down between 7.30am and 9am causing the oil to spill onto the road. Airlie Beach fire fighters and Whitsunday police attended the scene and blocked off the lane while sand was poured onto it to absorb the oil. Whitsunday Police Station officer in charge senior sergeant Steve O'Connell said they were lucky the oil spill happened in a big area and that there was enough room for traffic to go around it.
