CELEBRITY chef Jamie Oliver will bring his world-renowned Ministry of Food to Ipswich as part of an Australian-first deal with the city.

Premier Anna Bligh said a Ministry of Food Cooking Centre would be launched in d'Arcy Doyle Place, while a mobile Ministry of Food Outreach Truck would visit other communities and schools to conduct demonstrations and cooking classes.

“We have committed up to $2.5 million over four years to support the delivery of this program through the Good Foundation because we believe it can make a difference,” she said.

“The centre alone, with 10 week courses, one day demonstrations and an outreach program could reach up to 14,000 Queenslanders each year and that can have a massive effect on families and children across our state.”

Oliver said obesity was something that affected millions of people across the world.

“The time has come to take action to prevent this crisis from becoming worse. The Ministry of Food Centres are a practical way to help people learn the simple cooking skills they need to feed themselves and their families’ healthier food,” he said.

“I’m delighted that the Queensland Government is paving the way in Australia with the help of The Good Guys. These cooking classes are fun, produce delicious food from fresh ingredients and really take the fear out of cooking."

Ipwich Mayor Paul Pisasale said the initiative was exciting for Queensland and Australia.

“This is a shot in the arm for Ipswich but it is also a shot in the arm for health in our state,” he said.
