A MAN in his 60s is dead and three others injured after another horror crash on the Bruce Highway.

A semi-trailer burst into flames after a collision involving a minivan, two cars and a four wheel drive, about one kilometre south of Maryborough, today.

The deceased is believed to be the driver of the minivan which was “completely destroyed”.

Three people were taken to hospital.

The crash happened near Eatonvale about noon and the Bruce Highway remained closed as night began to fall.

The driver of the semi-trailer, which was carrying cattle, managed to release the animals before the vehicle was engulfed by fire.

The cattle were rounded-up and secured in a nearby paddock.

A Forensic Crash Unit spokesman said investigations and a sustained clean-up operation were expected to go into the night.

The Bruce Highway, which was closed in both directions, was not expected to reopen until late tonight.

State Emergency Services diverted traffic from the area down to the Cooloola Coast Road.

Truck and heavy vehicle drivers travelling towards the area were advised to stop off in neighbouring towns such as Gympie, Bundaberg or Childers and wait until the Bruce Highway has been reopened.
